As I was mark-making within this portal, a baby calf slowly appeared — resting peacefully in a meadow. I hadn’t planned it. It simply emerged. And the moment I saw it, my heart softened.
Cows have always held a special place in my life. After 35 years as a vegetarian, I see these gentle beings much like our beloved dogs — intelligent, emotional, full of quiet presence and warmth.
This painting was also inspired by time spent walking peaceful fields in North Carolina with my daughter and her fiancé, surrounded by free and happy cows. And by memories of staying on a farm in Maryland where we were able to meet a newborn calf — small, curious, and completely at ease in the world.
